1. Focus on your interests and needs
There’s a reason why you want to switch careers. Perhaps your current job isn’t fulfilling, paying, or challenging you enough. Or maybe you’re fresh from school and want to get your toes wet in the real estate industry. Either way, be sure to hone in on your interests and your needs. By staying aware of want you want, you can pursue a satisfying career.
2. Create short and long-term goals
It’s important to know where you want to go. We recommend sitting down and writing out some short and long-term goals. Your long-term goal might simply be to become a real estate agent. But what about short-term goals? Make a list of tiny baby steps that you can take every day to achieve that goal. You’ll be surprised how quickly those little steps build up.
3. Brush up your resume
Take time to review your resume. While you might not currently have industry experience, there are plenty of skills learned in other careers that transfer into real estate. Skills like organization, self-discipline, leadership, etc., all have a place in this industry. Be sure to highlight whichever experiences you believe are beneficial.
4. Set aside an emergency fund
Now is a great time to start setting aside an emergency fund. Starting a career or changing careers can be stressful financially. While we don’t recommend quitting your current job before securing a new position, there’s no harm in having some money set aside for a rainy day.
5. If currently employed, make an exit plan
As we said above, it’s not the best idea to quit a job before you secure a new one. However, there are certainly other circumstances to consider, especially if your mental health is at stake. If you know for certain that you’re leaving your current job to pursue real estate, it’s best to start making a plan now.
6. Start researching state real estate guidelines
Okay, let’s get onto the more real-estate-specific tips. It’s never too early to start researching local, state, and federal real estate guidelines. The simple act of taking 20 minutes to an hour at night to look over local regulations will give you a huge jumpstart once your start courses.
7. Sign up for real estate pre-licensing courses
It’s time to sign up for your pre-licensing course! And we happen to know one of the best real estate schools in New England! In Massachusetts, it’s required that you attend 40 hours of approved pre-licensing real estate education before taking your exam. With such a crucial step, you’ll want to make sure you attend a quality, informative course.
8. Pass the exam and apply for your license
After completing your licensing course, the next step is to take the exam. Don’t sweat it! Everything you have learned in your course will guide you through the test. If you don’t pass the first time, you can retake the exam as many times as necessary. After passing, you’re free to apply for your real estate license.
9. Start your job search
Now that you have your fancy new license, it’s time to start your job search! Be patient and look for opportunities that best fit your interests and needs. Also, be sure to leverage any networking that you have done along the way. Referrals go a long way in this business (in multiple aspects).
10. Begin your new career with positivity and patience
New careers are exciting! Especially in real estate. However, it can also be overwhelming. Major life changes aren’t always the easier things to overcome. But stay positive, have patience, and keep an open mind – a great career awaits you!
