So, you have decided to pursue a career in real estate. Great!
Switching to or starting a new career can be overwhelming. So, to help you out, we have laid out the basic steps that you need to take to become a real estate agent in Massachusetts.
Now, it’s worth noting that while you’ll find a simplified list of requirements below, there are many factors to consider and learn when starting your real estate career. In fact, there are entire schools dedicated to getting your real estate license.
However, we thought that this would be a time to learn the basic requirements to get started.
Real Estate Salesperson or Agent Requirements In Massachusetts
1. Complete 40 Pre-Licensing Education From Accredited Institutions
To start, you will need to sign up for pre-licensing real estate education. While this is a state requirement, it’s also one of the best ways to get yourself acquainted with the real estate industry and start your networking (it’s never too early!).
In Massachusetts, those who wish to become licensed real estate agents must receive a minimum of 40 hours of pre-licensing education. This education must be completed at an accredited real estate licensing school.
Whether virtual or in-person, it’s essential that an accredited educational institution hosts your real estate pre-licensing course; otherwise, you won’t be able to take your test.
Oh, and make sure that you pass your course’s final exam. Typically, a score of at least 75% is required to pass and move on to the next step.
2. Receive A Completed Massachusetts Board of Real Estate Educational Certificate Form
After you have passed your test, you’ll want to make sure that you apply to take your real estate licensing exam. You can apply to the exam by visiting the Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons Licensing section on Mass.gov.
According to PSI Services (the company that administers the exam), you’ll need the following documents to receive approval to take your exam.
- Obtain a completed Massachusetts Board of Real Estate Educational Certificate form to be completed by a board-approved Real Estate School (found at the end of this Candidate Information Bulletin).
- Obtain three (3) complete candidate endorsements from individuals unrelated to the applicant. They do not need to be Massachusetts residents. Classmates known by the applicant from only the real estate course may NOT sign the candidate endorsement.
3. Pass The Massachusetts Real Estate License Examination
Once approved, you will be eligible to take your real estate license examination.
The Massachusetts Real Estate Licensing Exam is 120 questions, broken down into two parts: a national section of 80 questions and a Massachusetts section of 40 questions. You need to score at least a 70% on this exam to pass.
If you don’t pass, don’t get down on yourself! You have two years from the time you pass your real estate pre-licensing course to pass the exam.
After passing, you will receive your real estate license and then you’ll be ready to start your new career!
